I wrote and drew the syndicated cartoon Quality Time, which was distributed across the country for ten years by Chronicle Features and then later, Universal Press Syndicate. Published work has appeared in Cosmopolitan, New Woman, Ms. Magazine, Radiance, Road and Track, Phi Beta Kappan, Glamour Magazine, and on the covers of the Berkeley Monthly. I have done the illustrations for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra for many years (check them out!)
I now am syndicated through Artizans.com, a Canadian syndicate and a massive number of cartoons are available for purchase and use. The originals, should you desire one, can be obtained directly from me.
In recent years I have developed a collection of watercolor paintings. I keep expecting myself to stop painting dogs, but there they are, showing up in the drawing. Most recently I have explored large format paintings with acrylics and some of this newer work is featured on the web site in the New Directions section. I have also worked on a series of illustrated children’s books; some are shown the drawings can be found in the children’s book section.
My greatest interest currently, in terms of artistic projects, is collaborative efforts where I translate a verbal “vision” into an image. Illustration work where I can take an idea and morph it into art is what I find most intriguing. Working with someone else, as a source of creative exchange, to create an image that most closely meets the envisioned, is a process that I especially appreciate. I have successfully collaborated with musicians for CD covers, professional organizations for advertising images, individuals for business logos and brochure images, and writers seeking cartoons or images to enhance the written project.
A collection of my cartoons, Quality Time and Other Quandaries, was published by Chronicle Books, and my most recent illustration/cartooning book projects have been a guidebook for parents of diabetic children, My Life as a Pancreas, by Patricia Call Essert, and a guide to singing, “The Magic of Singing” by Lucy Beck, a musician and voice instructor.
If you are someone seeking an illustrator, I am more than happy to consider collaborative projects, and offer free consultations and estimates, with a goal of producing a mutually-satisfying end result. Please e-mail me directly at gail@artalchemy.biz with a description of your project.
